RAS & Aquaponic Farming
Since 2010 I have been working with both fresh- and saltwater aquaponics and related plants as a potential circular aquaculture business model. I have been an advisor for FAO, Food & Agricultural Ministries, The Danish development agency ‘Danida’ as well as Technical Universities delivering research and national action plans promoting aquaponics and related youth ‘agripreneurs’. These achievements are based on long term R&D within the field of commercial oriented on profitable aquaponic farming and focusing among others on:
– Optimal biomass relations between fish & plants
– Environmental synergies from CO2 stripping in fish to increased plant growth
– Fish tanks operating as heat buffers in greenhouses saving energy in the northern hemisphere
– Closing the water cycle in aquaponics
Algae and seaweed are new areas of exploration for expanding circular approaches in aquaculture. PRK has experience working with different algae reactors utilizing fish manure, CO2 stripping and LED lighting producing algae with a high content of Omega-3 fatty acids for fish feed and human consumption. Likewise, PRK is the Danish national representative in the EU cost action program: CA 20106: Tomorrow’s ’wheat of the sea’: Ulva, a model for innovative mariculture running from 2021 to 2025.

My expertise

My core competences within development work is a deep understanding of the barriers and market failures agri- and aquaculture value chains encounter trying to reach different consumer outlets. I have in this regard, been assigned to support value chains targeting export markets, domestic urban-centered retailers as well as hospitality chains catering for game parks and high-end hotels. Long-term experiences have been acquired in East Africa, Latin America and the MENA region.
With my extensive knowledge in training and capacity building of stakeholders along agrofood chains organizing relevant workshops, guiding and leaving af self-progressing learning environment. As an agriculture expert I can offer consultancy within Urban farming and other sustainable grow systems. I have written extensively about the classical challenges when demand- and market driven approaches are at the focus for value chain development.
